Indonesia seeks to tap into leather sector potential

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry has revealed that exports of leather, footwear and leathergoods in the first nine months of 2018 were valued at $4.16 billion, an increase of 6.3% compared to the same period of last year.

It listed the key export destinations as the US, Belgium, Japan and China.

"Indonesia has great potential to develop the leather, footwear and leathergoods industry. Currently, Indonesia is in the sixth position in the world as an exporter of leather products, footwear and leather goods," said Gati Wibawaningsih, director general of small and medium industries, in a written statement. 

He went on to say that one of Indonesia’s strengths is the creativity of its artisans, which he said makes products from the country attractive and competitive in both domestic and international markets.
