Leather Pipeline: decline in automotive leather demand means the end of high prices
The November 13 edition of the Leather Pipeline market intelligence report has said a decline in demand for automotive leather has been in evidence since the spring and that the signs of a downturn are becoming ever clearer.

It describes the slowdown in demand for automotive leather as “a clear signal” to packers that “the time of endless high prices” for hides is over. Even though the price of many hides has already fallen, it added, prices for heavy, high-quality hides have remained “stubbornly high”.

But it predicts that packer firms will now need to lower prices. They can postpone this, the report says, by storing hides for example, but they cannot prevent it.
