Reports from Saudi Arabia suggest the Spanish beef sector could claim a bigger share of the market in the Middle East country.

Last year, Spain exported 250 tonnes of beef to Saudi Arabia, receiving a positive reaction among consumers there. A promotions body for Spanish beef, Provacuno, has said demand for beef overall in Saudi Arabia is around 220,000 tonnes per year, 60,000 tonnes of which it is able to produce itself.

Among the sources of the beef Saudi Arabia imports, Spain’s share is low. Provacuno’s figures suggest consumers in Saudi Arabia consume more Brazilian beef, around 67,000 tonnes, than local. Its share is 42% of the overall import market. India currently has a 32% share, while Australia supplies 14%.

Spain’s total beef production is around 650,000 tonnes per year. At the moment, 90% of its beef exports stay in the European Union.
