Amazon audit approves Marfrig activity

Norwegian quality assurance and risk management consultancy DNV-GL has given its seal of approval to the activity in 2017 of Brazilian packer and tanning group Marfrig in terms of its commitment to the Amazon.

Marfrig was one of a number of major packer companies in Brazil to sign up in 2009 to a public commitment on livestock farming in Amazon regions. DNV-GL has examined all of the company’s 2017 sourcing in these regions and found them to be in keeping with the commitment. It’s the sixth consecutive year in which Marfrig has passed the audit.

Instigated by campaign group Greenpeace, the commitment’s aim is to challenge deforestation in the Amazon, the mistreatment of indigenous peoples and slave-like working conditions for people working there.

On receiving the results of the audit from DNV-GL, Marfrig chief executive, Eduardo Miron, said: “Preserving the Amazon Biome is one of our sustainability priorities. We were the first company in the meat sector to sign up for the agreement with Greenpeace. The campaign group stepped away from the commitment in 2017, but we have kept up our good sustainability practices and strengthened our efforts to combat deforestation.”
