US: the hide’s share of total by-product value is slipping

23/10/2018
A new market intelligence report from specialist US agriculture industry information resource Farm Bureau has highlighted a substantial drop in the hide’s share of the overall value of by-products from cattle going to slaughter.

The report found that the hide accounted for 50% of the overall value of the by-product ‘drop’ in 2014. However, now the hide’s share is 35%.

Over the same period of time, the share of the total ‘drop’ value of all other main by-products has gone up. Tallow now accounts for 15% of the total value, compared to 11% in 2014. Similarly, tripe now accounts for 12%, compared to 8%, and the share of the tongue has gone from 6% in 2014 to 9% now.
