Social partners welcome extra scrutiny of products

Social partners COTANCE and CEC, representing employers in the European Union’s leather and footwear industries respectively, and trade union organisation IndustriAll have published a joint statement on “market surveillance”.

They have welcomed the prominence that the European Council and the European Parliament are giving to market surveillance in proposed new legislation on product compliance. The new legislation will define the requirements products must meet in all parts of the European Union in terms of user safety, public health, environmental protection and security.

Because this will mean more careful scrutiny of the products offered for sale to consumers in the EU, the social partners believe it will reduce the competition brands and manufacturers face from non-compliant, cheaper, imported leathergoods and shoes.

“Market surveillance should prevent loss of turnover and employment by law-abiding companies,” the statement said. “It contributes to a fair competition in the internal market and to the preservation of the social and economic interests of law-abiding companies and their workers. Non-compliant products should not be present on the internal market.”
