Sharp falls for US hide exports

US hide exports in the first eight months of 2018 are down substantially in volume and in value compared to the same period last year.

Figures from the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA) show total hide exports over the January-August period in 2018 of 13.75 million pieces in volume, bringing in revenues of just over $900 million. This represents a fall compared to the same months in 2017 of 9.5% in volume and of 20% in value.

Shipments of wet-salted hides, reaching 10.4 million for the eight months, fell by 6% in volume and by 24% compared to the previous year’s figures. Exports of wet blue, at a little of 3.3 million pieces, were down by 19% in volume and by 13% in value.
