Leather Pipeline: Brands shouldn't doubt leather’s animal welfare standards
02/10/2018
“We have to believe that the by-product we are using is subject to the highest level of supervision and control by inspectors and veterinarians,” it says. “Any additional efforts on top of this should not really be required.”
The report points out that the highest standard of animal welfare is “absolutely essential” as leather production depends so much on good quality materials with minimal defects. To ensure this, the industry has implemented numerous programmes to improve hide and skins quality.
“That many brands are now asking the leather pipeline to question the quality control and the government surveillance just confirms how little they know about the material they use,” the report laments.
It also warns that no level of animal welfare supervision will satisfy those “who have already chosen to live without animal products”.
The rest should have confidence in the mechanisms in place, with the report stressing: “It doesn’t need more bureaucracy and inefficient activities. We have enough of that already, and not just in the leather pipeline.”
