Trade surplus for Spanish leather industry in H1

Spanish tanners exported finished leather worth €203.7 million in the first six months of 2018, according to official figures released by the country’s customs office. This represents an increase of 2.9% compared to the figure for the corresponding period in 2017.

The value of shipments of semi-finished hides also rose, by 6.9% to reach €47.9 million, while those of raw hides fell by 11.6% to reach €101.5 million.

In terms of imports, Spain brought in finished leather worth €190.2 million in the first half of this year, an increase of 6.7% compared to the figure for the first half of 2017.

Imports of semi-finished hides were worth €67.7 million, a decrease of 9.8% compared to the same period last year. Spanish tanners brought in raw hides worth just over €43 million in the six-month period this year, more or less flat compared to the figure for this period in 2017.

The totals give the Spanish leather industry a trade surplus of more than €50 million for the half-year period.
