Only job interviews are too formal for sneakers, CLIA survey reveals
A survey that the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) carried out among young consumers in Beijing in summer 2018 revealed that attitudes towards formal footwear have changed dramatically in recent years.

Young people taking part in the study, which CLIA worked on with a number of fashion magazines published in the Chinese capital, said they would be happy to wear sneakers to traditional family or business banquets and even to weddings.

CLIA’s honorary chairman, Su Chaoying, said: “You can see this in the street now. Young people are very happy wearing sneakers to work, and they told us in the survey that they think it’s fine to wear sneakers on formal occasions now. They have seen pictures of movie stars and celebrities wearing sneakers to weddings, so they believe it’s fine for them to copy them.”

He went on to say, though, that most young, professional Beijingers would still wear formal, leather shoes to an interview to a new job to have a better chance of creating a good first impression.
