CNC wants more protection for the term ‘leather’

French leather industry body the Conseil National du Cuir (CNC) has expressed its commitment to fighting on a national and international level in order to eliminate the erroneous or deliberately misleading use of the term ‘leather’ to describe synthetic alternatives.

The organisation said that there are many examples of synthetic material manufacturers incorrectly using the term to describe their material when it doesn’t derive from animal hides. It gave the examples of mushroom ‘leather’, vegan ‘leather’ and synthetic ‘leather’.

As part of its efforts to combat this practice, CNC in June made an appeal to France’s economy and finance ministry to take the necessary steps to combat it.

It has now revealed that it has received a response from Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy and Finance. The minister said various government ministries had expressed to the European Commission “the urgent necessity” to put in place the appropriate measures to ensure the correct labelling of products sold on the European market. It also called for the term ‘leather’ to only be used on products of animal origin.

In response, Frank Boehly, president of CNC, said: “The members of the French leather industry celebrate the initiative of the economic and finance ministry and hopes that its call to protect the term ‘leather’ is heard and acted on in Brussels.”
