He told leatherbiz that many visitors to a busy Smit & zoon stand at the exhibition had asked for a copy of the publication, a booklet that aims to give tanners detailed information about the effect the chemical company’s products will have on the leather they make and the impact they will make on the environment.
Mr Van Haarst said the company hopes to broaden the Product Passport further and said areas in which tanners have asked for extra information include help in interpreting the information the booklet contains and, eventually similar information about other chemical companies’ products.
“We want tanners to look at the overall value of chemical products and not just a the cost per kilo,” the Smit & zoon chief executive said. “Next steps for us include coming up with a product range that stands out in terms of performance and impact, a ‘gold’ product portfolio, if you like, that targets improvements in wastewater, solid waste and emissions in tanneries through better concentration and better absorption.”
