China’s major tanners achieved sales revenues of $87.1 billion the first six months of 2018, according to new figures released by the China Leather Industry Association CLIA).

Speaking at a press conference at the start of ACLE 2018, Chen Zhanguang, secretary general of CLIA, said this figure represents growth of 4.3% compared to the first half of 2017.

In terms of volume, Mr Chen said China’s largest tanneries produced 310 million square-metres of finished leather, which represents a decrease of 11.4% compared to the same period in 2017. Leather footwear production went up by 3.2% to reach 2 billion pairs in the first six months of this year.

“The economy is shifting from being export-led to being consumption-driven. Innovation and consumption are driving growth now and this has brought new opportunities for China’s leather industry,” he added.
