ACLE opens in Shanghai

The 2018 edition of the All China Leather Exhibition opened in Shanghai on August 29.

At a press conference to open the event, director of organiser APLF Limited, Michael Duck, said the exhibition, which is now in its twentieth anniversary year, had attracted around 1,000 exhibitors and that 23,000 visitors were likely to attend. He said 90% of those visitors would be from “the major Chinese tanning provinces”.

Mr Duck went on to say that 2018 has been a “particularly challenging” year for the leather industry with raw materials at their lowest price since the height of the financial crisis of 2008-2009. He said this was because of “an overhang of raw material in the pipeline” and hesitant global demand for finished leather, mainly in the footwear sector, since early 2015.

“Obviously a pick-up in demand is required,” he concluded, “and that depends on designers.” He explained that this year ACLE organisers have included four designer workshops among the events taking place at the exhibition.
