Shanghai Shake-Up scores a success
28/08/2018
Led by Nicoline van Enter, founder of footwear design and manufacturing consultance The Footwearists, the event attracted around 50 delegates.
Presentations centred on the leather industry’s relationship with Generation Z consumers, broadly those born in the mid-1990s or later.
Ms van Enter said at the start of the forum: “There are opportunities for tanners in meeting the needs of these consumers, who love streetwear and hip-hop, but insisting that everyone must stick to a fixed definition of what is and what is not leather isn’t going to help. The facts are the facts, but that’s not getting through to consumers. Therefore, the leather industry must work with suppliers of alternative materials rather than spend all its time fighting with them tooth and nail. You’re not going to win any sympathy with consumers by doing that.”
