US to impose extra tariffs on Chinese imports

15/08/2018
Consultation on proposed extra tariffs on imports from China has now been completed in the US and customs officials there will now collect additional tariffs of 25% on goods worth $16 billion per year. These tariffs will come into effect on August 23.

This second set of measures follows the imposition of tariffs on approximately $34 billion of imports from China that came into effect on July 6.

The US claims that its investigations show that China is guilty of a number of disloyal trade practices, particularly with regard to technology transfer. For example, it said China uses joint-venture requirements, foreign investment restrictions and administrative processes “to require or pressure technology transfer from US companies”.
