Argentinean town wants to attract more fish leather artisans

Local politicians in the town of Rawson in southern Argentina have launched a plan to make more of an earlier initiative to produce fish leather from the skins of hake and other local fish.

In 2012 and 2103, the authorities in the province of Chubut began to promote the production of leather from local fish skins. Rawson politicians have now said they are launching a new project to add value to the fish leather by having local artisans increase their production of accessories made from the material.

They are also going to promote Rawson’s fish leather as a tourist attraction. “We have to keep making the most of our fish leather production capacity,” one politician, Daniel Paredes, said in recent comments, “because it helps us protect the environment. We sell our fish in fillets and the skins, previously, were just being thrown away. This project is ready to take off, but we need more finished leathergoods manufacturers to come here and make accessories to sell to tourists.”
