Leathergoods artisans in Nicaragua urged to focus on exports

The country has experienced bitter disputes between government forces and protestors since April 18 and frequent violent clashes have so far cost at least 317 lives, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Street protests continue and there have also been roadblocks, and many shops and businesses across the Central American country have been unable to keep to normal opening times.
With the situation in the domestic market so difficult, the Nicaraguan Association of Producers and Exporters (APEN) has issued a statement to urge manufacturers to take advantage of European Union funding that is in place to help companies attend the Regional Exporters’ Fair in Guatemala in September.
APEN market-growth assessor, Nora Zeas, has said the fair will offer good opportunities to manufacturing companies, including those making leathergoods. She said: “It’s an international fair that can open up new opportunities for all manufacturing firms. Levels of consumption are likely to be down in the local market, so it’s essential for companies to look to export markets to fill the gap.”
The event takes place in Guatemala City on September 26 and 27.
