Algeria prepares for Eid al-Adha raw material collection

Algeria’s industry ministry has begun a formal campaign to collect sheepskins at the time of Eid al-Adha, the festival of the sacrifice, to supply local tanners with the raw material rather than see it go to waste. At the festival, families who can afford it slaughter a sheep or goat (other animals are also possible) often throwing the skins away.

The ministry has said raising awareness among members of the public is the key to collecting the material and, for this year’s festival, likely to begin on August 22, its campaign will only focus on six areas: Alger, Oran, Constantine, Jijel, Sétif and Batna. Posters have gone up already in town halls and mosques and messages are also reaching citizens via text message, telling them to take skins to official collection points.

Next year, the authorities will attempt to roll the programme out across the whole of Algeria.

If attempts to get the message across to people are successful, the ministry has said it hopes this year to collect 800,000 skins over the days of the festival. However, expanding the programme to the whole of Algeria next year could yield as many as 4 million.
