The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association, Amanullah Aftab, has sent a message of congratulation to former sports star Imran Khan, who appeared to win the country’s general election at the end of July.

Subject to enquiries into alleged voting irregularities, Mr Khan, who was captain of the Pakistan national cricket team in the 1980s, should take office in the coming weeks.

In his message, Mr Aftab said the country’s tanners hope a change in government will bring them relief in areas such as high production and energy costs, a high tax burden and a backlog in refunds  of sales tax.

He said the country’s leather industry has suffered from five consecutive years of falling revenue and said 40% of companies in the sector have had to close down, with the rest still “suffering severely”.
