CICEG laments scarcity of skilled footwear workers

25/07/2018
The executive president of the CICEG footwear industry association in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, Alejandro Gómez Tamez, has said a shortage of skilled workers is one of the main challenges facing the state’s shoemaking companies.

“Almost every day we receive reports from our members about the scarcity of workers,” he said in an interview with local media. “This is a very dynamic region and this causes a general lack of workers, which is complicated for the footwear industry.”

Faced with this situation, CICEG has started to work with the state government to help more people acquire the skills required to start a career in the footwear industry.

Mr Gómez Tamez also addressed ongoing concerns about the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which came about following the collapse of the TPP agreement.

CICEG has previously expressed its opposition to this agreement, fearing it would make Mexican shoe companies vulnerable to cheaper imports from countries like Vietnam and Singapore, two of the other signatories.

Mr Gómez Tamez revealed CPTPP is likely to come into force in the first half of 2019. At this point, Mexican companies would need to be prepared for its potential consequences, he warned. He added that CICEG has already begun to implement support programmes for the micro and small footwear business it feels could be especially vulnerable.
