Portuguese shoemakers eye impact on US market

The president of Portuguese footwear industry association Apiccaps, Luís Onofre, has predicted that US consumers “won’t trade for anything else” once they discover the quality of shoes made in Portugal.

He made the comment in an interview with specialist fashion media, during which he discussed the fact that the US is the target for Apiccaps’ next major sales push. This will include taking the ‘Made in Portugal’ initiative to tradeshows in the US to promote the country’s craftsmanship and manufacturing skills.

Mr Onofre, who was elected Apiccaps president in April 2017, revealed that Portugal already exports footwear worth around €70 million to the US and said it can consolidate its position in the next five years.

He added that one of the achievements of the Portuguese footwear industry is that it has successfully combined traditional craftsmanship and know-how with modern technologies and cutting-edge design techniques.
