Project partners involved in the Skills4Smart TCLF Industries 2030 project gathered in the shoemaking town of Elda in eastern Spain in mid-June for a detailed technical meeting.

Skills4Smart TCLF is a four-year project that aims, with funding from Europe’s Erasmus+ programme, to “upskill and reskill” people working in the textiles, clothing, leather, and footwear (TCLF) sectors in many European countries.

Industry bodies COTANCE (for leather), CEC (for footwear) and Euratex (for textiles and clothing) are working together to co-ordinate the project, in which 21 private and public stakeholders from nine different countries are already involved.

Discussions at the Elda meeting focused on identifying what education providers and good education projects are already in place for workers in these sectors across Europe. The partners also set out plans to arrange interviews and focus groups at companies operating in each sector with the aim of measuring the needs of employers.

“The upskilling and reskilling of the TCLF workforce of 2 million people in the European Union, matching companies’ needs, improving the image of careers in these sectors, and supporting skills development and employment opportunities are the main objectives of this far-reaching project,” the partners said after the meeting.
