Export and employment success for Ubrique leathergoods
02/07/2018
A longtime centre of excellence in producing high-end leathergoods, Ubrique’s fortunes have picked up dramatically in the course of this decade. The convergence at the start of the twenty-first century of a rush among brands to take production to Asia and the global economic downturn meant export earnings among Ubrique’s manufacturers fell to €15 million in 2009. The corresponding figure for 2017 was €50 million.
Between Ubrique and the nearby town of Prado del Rey, there are now 290 leathergoods manufacturers, employing a total of 5,000 directly and responsible for another 1,000 indirect jobs. The two towns have a combined population of under 25,000 people.
