Some Turkish tanners have held back on move to new clusters

The Turkish government’s support for dedicated leather clusters with advanced wastewater treatment plants in different parts of the country has helped a large number of tanners relocate their businesses, but recent analysis of the clusters shows that a majority of Turkish tanners has still not made the move.

At most, 40% of tanners in Turkey are now operating in the clusters such as those at Corlu-Tekirdag, Menemen-Izmir and Tuzla-Istanbul. Others have said they lack the capital to finance new buildings, higher labour costs and the required contribution to the running of common effluent treatment plants.
