Assocal bemoans “lukewarm” start to 2018
Following growth in export revenues of 3.5%, to €9.2 billion, in 2017, the Italian footwear industry has had a slower start to 2018, with export revenues flat in the first quarter and volumes down.

At its annual general meeting in Milan in mid-June, industry body Assocalzaturifici revealed that, in terms of volume, its member companies shipped 211.1 million pairs to customers outside Italy in 2017, an increase in volume of 2.6% compared to 2016. However, exports in the first three months of 2018 were down in volume by more than 3%.

Assocalzaturifici president, Annarita Piloti, said on announcing the figures: “Despite the slow start to this year, we need to keep toiling away and not be too disheartened. We were hoping that 2017 was going to be a turning point for the industry. Our exports reached the highest value in 15 years. But the extended period of economic difficulty in recent years continues to leave its mark.”
