ETP not entirely to blame for Alcanena odour issue

A wastewater treatment plant in Alcanena in Portugal, which serves the tanneries and the town, is not totally to blame for an odour problem there. This is the conclusion of a new academic study, carried out by Professsor Carlos Borrego of the University of Aveiro.

An association of users of the effluent treatment plant, chaired by Joaquim Inácio of vegetable-tanned leather manufacturer Fonte Velha, commissioned the study. It wanted to carry out a formal investigation into the links between strong odours in and around Alcanena and the effluent treatment plant.

The association, AUSTRA, was stung by criticisms of the facility during a spell of hot weather in the summer and autumn of 2017. This occurred in spite of a €3.5 million investment in improvements since 2012.

Professor Borrego’s report contains two main conclusions. It says a large proportion of the bad smells in Alcanena do not come from the effluent treatment plant, but come instead from a relatively new network of tanks or from pre-treatment facilities at companies.

It also says 54% of all the bad odours that do come from the effluent treatment plant come from an uncovered area at the entrance to the site where effluent is first received.
