The US Hide Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA) has released export figures for US hides for the first four months of 2018.

Across the January-April period, packers and traders exported just over 8 million wet-salted hides from the US, bringing in revenues of $412.5 million. These figures represent a 4% increase in volume, but a decline in value of 18% compared to the same months in 2017.

Overseas buyers of US wet-salted hides were paying an average of around $64.50 per piece in the first four months of last year. The corresponding figure for the early months of 2018 is around $51.25, indicating a drop in price of more than 20%.

USHLA’s figures also show that wet-end tanners in the US shipped just over 1.5 million wet blue hides between January and April 2018, earning export revenues of $157.2 million. These figures show a decline of 26% in volume and of 21% in value compared to the same months in 2017. However, the average price of wet blue hides has gone up.

In the first four months of 2017, overseas buyers of US wet blue were paying, on average, just under $94 per hide. During the same period in 2018, they had to pay an average of $101.41.
