UK-based tannery Clyde Leather has revealed it has invested a seven-figure sum in tanning machinery as it seeks to increase its production capacity.

The company, based in East Renfrewshire in Scotland, was established in 1955 by Walter Bevan Harris. It now employs 30 people.

Richard Harris, the company’s managing director and grandson of the founder, was quoted by local media as saying: “The British leather industry declined significantly in the 1990s but through hard work, innovation, diversification and creating a consistent quality produce we have not only survived but have grown since then. We have invested extensively in machinery and our people infrastructure which has allowed us to remain at the forefront of the industry.”

He added that around 90% of its output is for the UK market, with its leather used for shoes, handbags and belting. “Our leather is available and has exposure everywhere in the UK,” he said.
