Bangladesh could receive split export boost

Bangladesh’s finance minister, Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, has confirmed that leather is the country’s second-largest source of export revenues, behind ready-made garments.

On presenting the national budget for 2018-2019, the minister said the leather sector performs well in earning export revenues partly because it uses domestic rather than more expensive raw material. “The future for this sector is brighter than for many other businesses,” he said.

However, Mr Muhith also pointed out that there is a technicality preventing Bangladeshi tanners from exporting split, which is that the Bangladesh customs tariff includes no separate HS (Harmonised System) code for split. He said he would propose changing this and creating new HS codes for split products.
