Beef consumption grows as the global cattle herd passes 1 billion head

Competitive prices and strong global demand have led the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to predict 2% growth in global beef production in 2018 to reach 57 million tonnes. An USDA market report says most of the growth will come from the US, Brazil and Argentina.

The report says US beef production will grow by 6% this year and reach a record volume of 11.4 million tonnes. In Brazil, growth will be driven by heavier carcass weights, stronger domestic demand and record exports. Drought conditions in Argentina are prompting livestock farmers to send cattle to slaughter sooner than planned, boosting slaughter figures.

USDA said global cattle stocks in April 2018 were more than 1 billion head, including a herd size of 305 million head in India, 232 million head in Brazil, 96.8 million in China, 94.4 million in the US, 88.4 million in the European Union and 53.8 million in Argentina.
