Contract tanners in Turkey may start making finished leather

Industry observers in Turkey have said the culture of contract tanning there is poised to move beyond production of wet blue to offer finished product manufacturers finished leather production on a contract tanning basis.

Clusters including those at Gerede, Bor, Tuzla-Istanbul and Bursa are home to operators that make wet blue under contract for tanners elsewhere to finish. Some of these are state-supported operators and others are privately owned.

There is speculation that some operators are now preparing to add retanning, dyeing, fatliquoring and finishing operations to be able to offer finished leather to their customers.
