COTANCE prepares for its fiftieth anniversary

COTANCE also expressed regret that the perception of leather in the public eye is “greatly influenced by fake news”. It said this false information is largely conveyed “by vegan or environmental activist organisations whose primary goal is either the eradication of meat consumption or the elimination of industry”. It said these campaign groups do not hesitate to “spread lies and confusion about the nature of leather on social media”.
Delegates agreed that COTANCE should intensify its strategy in support of the image of leather, pushing for mandatory authenticity legislation in Europe and developing a web-based communication campaign addressing consumers.
Next year will be the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of COTANCE as an umbrella association for national leather industry bodies and delegates at the meeting in Verona agreed that, to mark the anniversary, it should come up with a new slogan. COTANCE said it will hold “a stakeholder-inclusive process” to choose the slogan and that it should reflect the ambition of the European leather industry in the twenty-first century. It will test suggestions to see how well they work in different languages and for different audiences and will make a definitive choice at its autumn council meeting in Naples in October.
