Strike in Brazil will lower tanners’ output by 1.5 million hides

A truckers’ strike in Brazil, which has so far lasted nine days, has caused factories across the country, including tanneries, to cease production owing to the difficulties in bringing raw materials in and in transporting their products out. In a nationwide protest about the price of fuel, lorry-drivers have blocked major roads.

On May 30, after the country’s interim president, Michel Temer, announced a 60-day reduction in prices, tanning industry association CICB called on the truck-drivers to remove the road-blocks to return the situation to return to normal and to avoid “irreversible” damage to the economy.

It said the output from Brazil’s tanneries over the period of the strike has already fallen by around 1 million hides and added that, even if the road-blocks clear quickly it will probably take another week for the flow of goods to return to normal.

CICB estimated that total production could be down by 1.5 million hides by the end of the strike, “which will have an impact on deliveries and future sales of the Brazilian tanneries”.
