US says it will move ahead with new tariffs on Chinese imports

The Trump administration has announced that it will go ahead with plans to impose 25% tariffs on imports from China. The US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA) has said the list of targeted goods will become public on June 15. Announcements earlier in the year led to statements from China about retaliatory measures that would affect meat imports from the US if they go ahead.

In recent weeks, the tone had been more reconciliatory, but the US government’s latest decision suggests the two sides have been unable to come to an agreement.

Early indications are that the US will focus on imports from China that contain “industrially significant technology”, including those products related to the ‘Made in China 2025’ programme, a 10-year initiative to upgrade production capacity in China and move the country’s manufacturing sector towards Industry 4.0.
