China approves Colombia’s FMD-free status

29/05/2018
China has recognised almost all of Colombia as being officially free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) and the two countries will now move forward with plans for the South American country to begin exporting beef to China.

Officials representing the Chinese government spent a week in Colombia in 2017 examining cattle-rearing practices there, the systems for controlling animal disease and the processes in place for certifying exports of meat.

On May 28, Colombia’s ministry for agriculture and rural affairs said the Chinese delegation had reached a positive decision. Agriculture minister, Juan Guillermo Zuluaga, said the goal of opening up this important market of 1.3 billion consumers for Colombian beef had come a step closer.

Approval applies to 27 mainland departments of Colombia.
