Artisan leather clusters are working in Paraguay

Co-ordinators in Paraguay of funding from the European Commission believe small business owners in the South American country are benefiting from working in groups. Leather and leathergoods are among the activities that small companies are undertaking, using money from the European Commissions AL-Invest fund.

The AL-INVEST program is one of the most important international co-operation programmes run by the Commission. With a focus purely on Latin America, it began in 1994 and has worked since then to promote and encourage productivity in thousands of micro-, small and medium-size companies in Latin America.

In Paraguay, co-ordinating body Unión Industrial Paraguaya (UIP) said recently that arranging for tiny companies to work in groups has worked well. UIP’s Nathalie Bordas told local media: “It’s easier for these businesses to sell their merchandise as a group than to try to do so individually. We have set up eight clusters or groups for sectors that include leather and leathergoods.”
