Myanmar to set up special economic zone on border with China

Myanmar is following in the footsteps of Kazakhstan and Laos by agreeing to build a special economic co-operation zone on its border with China.

China has outlined a policy of setting up bilateral border economic cooperation zones on its borders with a range of neighbouring countries, all as part of its much wider strategy for international economic development, the Belt and Road Initiative.

The border economic cooperation zones are special economic regions in which China and its neighbours will set up industrial and commercial projects.
