Italy is still the biggest market in the world for exports of wet blue from the US, but the growth of 2017 has not continued into the first quarter of this year.

Between January and March 2018, Italian tanners imported just over 390,000 wet blue hides from the US, paying a total of $41.1 million for the material.

These figures represent a decline compared to the first three months of last year of more than 20% in volume and 11.4% in value.

Globally, US wet blue exports for the quarter fell by 23% year on year in volume to reach just under 1.2 million hides. In value terms, the decline was 16% to just under $120 million.

After Italy, the next-biggest market is China, which imported just under 360,000 US wet blue hides over the three months, with a value of $35.8 million. These figures also represent a fall compared to the same quarter last year, of 37% in volume and 31% in value.
