UNIC president calls for a new ‘Mediterranean’ leather association

Speaking at the reopening of TFL’s leather fashion centre in Castelfranco di Sotto on May 3, Mr Russo, who runs the Russo di Casandrino tannery near Naples, said: “We are proud of being European and we are proud of being Italian. We believe in our know-how and we believe in passing that know-how on from one generation to the next. I think it would help us if, one day, we can set up an association for the Mediterranean area with our French and Spanish friends.”
UNIC director general, Fulvia Bacchi, later explained to leatherbiz that this is a new idea but insisted Gianni Russo is serious about it. “This could all happen within COTANCE,” she said, in reference to the body that represents the leather industry at European Union level. “It’s just that our president’s feeling is that tanners in France, Spain and Italy face different problems compared to those that companies in northern Europe experience.”
