Tanners export more from Pakistan but earn less

Pakistan’s leather industry recorded growth of 1.7% in export revenues during the first nine months of current financial year, July 2017 to March 2018. In total, companies in the leather sector brought in $711.4 million over the nine-month period.

Exports of finished leather increased by 33% in volume, but values declined by 4.7%. Tanners shipped 21.2 million square-metres of leather between July and March, but brought in only $240.4 million.

Exports of finished leather products increased in value by 4%, reaching $390 million. It exported 7.3 million pairs of shoes over the period, bringing in $72.3 million. This indicates a fall in volume of 1.1% but an increase in value of 11.8% compared to the same nine-month period in the previous financial year.
