Leather Pipeline: Luxury remains the bright spark for leather
01/05/2018
Nearly all the major luxury accessory companies have reported strong sales figures in the first quarter of 2018, with their leather-related divisions outperforming their other business segments. This has prompted them to begin planning further expansion of their production capacities, which can only be good news for leather demand.
The report explains that the only question these expansion plans pose is which material luxury brands will turn to once their preferred source, mostly superior quality veal skins from Europe, are exhausted.
“If the numbers attached to their expansion plans are correct, the requirements for premium leather will no longer be able to be met by their favoured raw material source,” it says, adding that other types of leather could be the beneficiaries of the success of luxury brands.
The Leather Pipeline also suggest that leather stands to gain from a fashion trend in favour of fewer flawless and uniform surfaces. This could lead to mainstream fashion brands using more leather.
“Amidst all the misery, the luxury industry remains the most positive spark,” the report adds. It praises luxury brands for “remaining loyal to the beauty and image of leather in spite of the anti-beef and anti-leather campaigns” and says their influence on the world of fashion could be the key to a return to mass consumption of leather.
