Speaking during a visit to Dhaka, he said although China is still an important leather and leathergoods supplier to Europe, rising wages and increased domestic demand in the country are having an effect on its exports.
“It creates good opportunities for factories in other countries, including Bangladesh, which are capable of manufacturing the same products,” he said.
During his time in Bangladesh, Mr Scherpe also discussed the forthcoming Leatherworld Paris exhibition, which will take place for the first time in September. Messe Frankfurt announced the launch of this event in November following the success of the Leatherworld event it has been running in the Middle East since 2015.
Leatherworld Paris, which will take place from September 17-20, is co-located with the organiser’s existing events: Texworld, Apparel Sourcing, Shawls & Scarves, Texworld Denim and Avantex Paris.
Mr Scherpe urged Bangladeshi leather and leathergoods exporters to showcase their products at international exhibitions such as Leatherworld Paris. He described raw materials as a “promising category” for companies from the Asian country as some European buyers look for lower-cost material suppliers due to rising manufacturing costs and tight supply situations.
Omer Salahuddin, chief executive officer of Messe Frankfurt Bangladesh, said eight to ten local leather and leathergoods exporters could participate in the first edition of Leatherworld Paris.
