Turkish tanners welcome live cattle imports

Turkey’s agriculture ministry has given a boost to the country’s tanners by agreeing to import 500,000 head of live cattle to ease the strain on the supply and price of beef.

Domestic supply of cattle for slaughter is no longer enough to keep up with demand for beef and the government has said it will bring animals in from Ireland, Spain, France, Brazil and Uruguay over the course of the next year. Tanners have said they will welcome the extra supply of good-quality hides.
