Hope for shoe leather from 2019 on, Leather Pipeline predicts
17/04/2018
It says there are two main reasons for hoping shoe brands may look at using larger volumes of leather after next year. The first is that the mesh uppers that have become popular in casual and athletic footwear could lead to what the report calls “a price war”. This is because these shoes now look so similar that brands may start to consider using other materials to differentiate themselves from their rivals and leather would fit the bill.
At the same time, the report points out that the price of oil has been steadily increasing and now sits at double the level it was two years ago. Many of the materials footwear brands have used as cheaper alternatives to leather are based on oil and, as a result of the price-hikes, the gap in cost between leather and synthetics is going to close.
