Leather industry in Argentina contracts by 16.2%

Figures published by the Argentinian government show a mixed bag in terms of growth in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the first two years since President Mauricio Macri took over.

Of 16 sectors of the economy that feature in analysis by official statistics agency Indec, 11 show growth. However, commentators have been quick to point out that areas registering growth are the least important for the overall economy.

In contrast, those that make the largest contribution to overall GDP levels and to job creation are the ones that show a decline over the two years since Mr Macri became president.

The struggling sectors are mostly industrial ones and, among these, the leather industry recorded a decline 16.2%. This means that, between the end of 2015, when Mauricio Macri won the general election, and the end of 2017, the leather industry’s contribution to the overall Argentinian economy contracted by 16.2%.
