France’s leather-sector exports grew by 7% in 2017 compared to the year before, reaching €10.6 billion in value. This figure includes shipments outside France of raw hides and skins, finished leather, shoes, leathergoods, gloves, apparel and other goods.

Leathergoods contributed most to the total, bringing in €6.5 billion, growth year on year of 9%. Footwear came next, with export values of almost €3.2 billion, an increase of 7% compared to the figure for 2016.

Raw material exports were down by 2%, however, to €318.6 million, while the figure for finished leather was flat at €328.8 million.

Commenting on the figures, Frank Boehly, president of industry body the Conseil National du Cuir, said: “We are delighted by the strong overseas demand for handbags made by our luxury houses. This constant growth has led to the opening of new workshops in France and the creation of new jobs.”
