Chinese footwear industry generates more than $120 billion in 2017

In parallel to its release of figures for the full-year performance of the leather sector in China in 2017, the China Leather Industry Association revealed that footwear manufacturers generated sales last year of $123 billion. This is an increase of 4.4% compared to 2016.

Overall, exports of footwear reached 9.6 billion pairs leaving China for overseas markets with a combined value of $45.6 billion, indicating an increase compared to the previous year of 3.7% in volume and of 1.7% in value. This means exported shoes had an average value per pair of $4.75.

Exports specifically of leather footwear reached 680 million pairs in volume and brought in revenues of $9.3 billion, declines year on year of 1.2% and 3.4% respectively. Exported leather shoes, therefore, had an average price per pair of $13.68.

China imported 139 million pairs of shoes in 2017, with a value of $3.2 billion. These figures show an increase in volume of 23.8% and of 18% in value compared to 2016 and that imported shoes overall had an average value per pair of $23.02.

Imports of leather shoes were 37.5 million pairs in total with a value of $1.4 billion, showing a decline of 10% in volume and 6.5% in value. Imported leather shoes had an average price per pair of $37.33.
