US cattle-on-feed up 9% on March 1

There are plenty of challenges facing the leather pipeline but a lack of available raw material is not one of them and is unlikely to become a problem any time soon.

New figures from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that, on March 1, 2018, the total number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the US was 11.7 million head, 9% above the total on March 1, 2017.

USDA calculates the total by surveying US feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head.
