Pakistan tanners ask for help to meet LWG requirements

27/03/2018
The Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) has asked the country’s government to withdraw customs duties and sales tax on imports of tanning machinery, to remove duties on imports of wet blue and to provide 75% matching grants for tanneries to set up their own effluent treatment plants.

PTA said tanners in Pakistan are coming under pressure to have their own effluent treatment plants to meet the requirements of multi-stakeholder body the Leather Working Group, which their customers are urging them to do.

In a similar vein, the association also called on the government to allocate sufficient funding to upgrade the common effluent treatment plant at the Korangi tanning cluster in Karachi to help tanners there meet Leather Working Group requirements.
